Okay, I declared that I converted into an UCHUSENTAI: NOIZ fan when I heard them sing a cover of the Filipino song Liwanag sa Dilim (Light in the Darkness) by Rivermaya. I think that they’re very refreshing and energetic. I admire that they’re willing to sing a song in a foreign language, in order to raise support for typhoon victims in the Philippines. Then I watched their version of Pinoy Ako (I’m a Filipino) by pop rock band Orange and Lemons. I was like, what the heck?
I was initially bewildered by this turn of events. As I watch the UCHUSENTAI: NOIZ band members dancing and singing Pinoy Ako under blooming sakura trees and a crowded Japanese temple, I was like, where is the Pinoy in this? They clearly shot the video in Japan, and I didn’t see a single Filipino. But I soon found myself grooving along with the music. I began to calm down and notice things. The first thing that I noticed is that the members are all wearing Barong Tagalog in different colours. So Pinoy! Then I noticed their silly dance moves, and I was like, that’s so pinoy!
My earlier criticisms are soon forgotten, as I sit back and enjoy their cover of Pinoy Ako. It doesn’t matter anymore that they’re a Japanese rock band dancing under sakura trees and outside Japanese temples singing Pinoy Ako (I’m a Filipino). As long as they’re doing the original song justice, it’s fine with me. By the way, I think that UCHUSENTAI: NOIZ’s version is better than the original. It’s more energetic and fun.
