Fiery Portgas D. Ace: Come Back To Life Please!!! 。゚( ゚இ‸இ゚)゚。

< Day 2 | Day 4 >
Day 3:  Favourite Male Anime Character

Choosing my favourite male anime character is difficult.  I have so many!  I can’t decide on my number 1 favourite among them.  But I don’t want to list all of them in this post, so I decided to choose only one.  I chose Portgas D. Ace from my number 1 favourite series ONE PIECE.  Ace, more known as Hiken no Ace (火拳のエース / Fire Fist Ace), is Luffy’s sworn older brother alongside Sabo.

If you look at the big picture, his appearance in the series is very short.  I’m pleased with the animators’ decision to extend his appearance at the Alabasta Arc, compared to his very brief introduction in the manga.  Kudos to TOEI!  The appearance of his character may be short, but the impact of his role on the whole series is very huge.  His death is my number 1 Most Gut-Wrenching Scene in ONE PIECE before the time-skip.

I may be in grief over his death and wish that he’s still alive, but I think that his death is a genius move by Oda-sensei because it catapulted the 2-year time-skip in the series, where the entire Mugiwara Pirates powered-up, making the series so much better.  But still. . .I really MISS him! ƈ  ͡ (ुŏ̥̥̥̥ ‸ ŏ̥̥̥̥) ु

He’s now easily one of the legendary characters in the series, like his 2 fathers, Gol D. Roger and Shirohige (Edward Newgate).  I just adore his character.  Furukawa Toshio-san (古川 登志夫) did an excellent job in bringing his character to life.  For those of you who don’t know, Furukawa-san is also the voice of Dragon Ball‘s Piccolo.

It may have been a difficult choice to choose a favourite male anime character, but I think I’m satisfied with Portgas D. Ace (for now, at least).  How about you?  Who’s your favourite male anime character?

  1. Wow. THAT figure though… Excellent! Those muscles.
From your anime screenshot, it seems like Ace didn’t have much muscles, so I’m guessing the figure is modeled after his design from the manga.

    1. I know, right? It’s so awesome! I’ve been eyeing it. I don’t collect figures, but I’m very tempted to get one of these. So cool!

Hmmm. . . I think that the manufacturer of the figure exaggerated the muscles a bit, but I’m not really complaining. In fact, I prefer it. 😉

      1. He’s very similar to how they made him in the anime. The GIF image that I used was from the Alabasta Arc. However, his appearance just before his death is much more muscular in both manga & anime. So I think that the manufacturers used his later appearance as the inspiration, and exaggerated that a bit.

      2. I stopped collecting anime related stuff right after I graduated from high school. I used to buy local anime magazines, which come with free posters inside. And I used to go to anime conventions as well. They had these mini games where the audience could come up the stage to answer some questions. I was an active one, you see. That’s how I got some of my very small anime figures. Not the nendoroid/figma ones, which you can play with by changing their faces and equip them with some of the tools the characters normally go with. I must say, the ones I got were probably of the least quality, were packed in solo boxes and usually sold at very cheap prices. That’s why they [event organizers and sponsors etc etc] could afford to give these products freely to the non-participants of cosplays at the events. Still, I was very happy to get those stuff. 😀

      3. I see. That’s alright. I hear that they are organizing more anime con in the Philippines. Sounds fun. But I think that even though those are the “cheap” ones, at least you had fun at the convention. That’s what’s important. Maybe if those anicon there gather more sponsors, their freebies would increase in quality. 😀

      4. Yup, I surely enjoyed that one. 😀 I got to take some photos with my favorite cosplayers then, and it was total BLISS. ❤
Anyway, I can't tell about the quality of the freebies at anime cons today because I really haven't gone to one in 4 years. x_x They might be better in quality, yes, because I think cosplay in our city is getting more popular now than it was in my time. Lels. And, really, companies are a lot more willing to collaborate with businessmen/entreps to make events successful. Those would give them a boost in publicity, so it's a win-win for them.

      5. That’s great. I watched a video on Youtube of a “popular” Filipino cosplayer (I don’t know her) that is interviewed by a Japanese show (I don’t know the show either).

Well, if these events potentially make money to these companies, then I’m sure that they’ll be more willing to sponsor them to reap the benefits later on.

      6. O.O Maybe it’s Alodia. Full name’s Alodia Gosiengfiao. She’s the most famous coser in PH and has gone around the world in various events; became endorser in several products/services related to anime/cosplay; and even became a TV host (and had a cameo in a few local movies). XD

  2. Hmm, that wouldn’t have been the case for Naruto, y’know?
    Take example, Character X dies.
A few arcs later, X is resurrected by some villain with some jutsu(lets call it the Recycling Characters No Jutsu)
It brings no real significance, well, at least (maybe unfortunately), characters in One Piece stay dead.

    1. Indeed, but we never know. It’s just that Ace’s character is very likable. I really have no other complaints about his death besides the fact that it’s sad. His death really brought the series on another, much better level so it works out in the end.
