Falling for Full Metal Panic!

< Day 10 | Day 12 >
Day 11:  Favourite Mech Anime

This is quite difficult.  I’m not a big fan of mecha anime, but I do enjoy some bad-ass robots, provided that they come with awesome stories.  Growing up, I watched Magic Knight Rayearth ( 魔法騎士マジックナイトレイアース), Toushou Daimos (闘将ダイモス), and of course, Choudenji Machine Voltes V (超電磁マシーン ボルテスファイブ) or simply known as Voltes V.

I don’t remember much about these anime series, but I become nostalgic at the mere mention of these titles and the sight of their images.  For sure, these titles remind me of my childhood.  I can’t choose my favourite among these 3, since I don’t really remember their stories.

When I was a preteen, I came across another mecha anime titled Full Metal Panic! (フルメタル·パニック!).  I was older when I watched FMP, so I remember its story more than the earlier mecha anime I watched as a child.  I don’t remember its entire plot, but I know that it has good romance and some bad-ass action.  The male protagonist, Sagara Sousuke, is one of my earlier anime crushes.  He’s so cool and I wanted to marry him.

The animation was not bad.  It’s great, especially during the fighting scenes involving the firearms and robots.  Most of the characters are cool.  I have no complaints about the character of my former crush, Sagara Sousuke.  However, I’m not too fond of the character design of the female protagonist, Chidori Kaname.  It doesn’t really impress me that much.  I prefer the character design of the silver-haired female captain, Tessa Testarossa.  If their character designs are switched, perhaps I’ll like FMP better.

Its actual plot is a blur in my mind.  Perhaps I’ll refresh my memory one of these days by watching it again.  We’ll see.  Although I mentioned before that I’m not a big fan of mecha anime, I’m not averse at trying series that I’ve never watched before.  If you know of a good mecha anime–with an AWESOME plot, please–don’t hesitate to share it with me.

Full Metal Panic! is my current favourite mecha anime.  What’s yours?

    1. Watched some of the earlier episodes of Code Geass, but never really finished it. Perhaps when I watch the whole thing, it’ll be a favourite, as well. Oh, so much to watch. Can’t wait!

Well, I don’t really remember much about FMP. All I can remember is liking it, my crush on the male protagonist, and the bad-ass robots. So I can’t really say if you’ll like it.

      1. I forgot to mention Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. 🙂 It’s another great mecha series, too! I can’t really compare it with Code Geass, since there’s a difference in their approach to mecha. If we’re to strictly limit ‘mecha anime’ in this challenge to anime with heavy focus on mecha, I’d say that TTGL has a better utilization of its robots. 😀 Meanwhile, mechas were more of a political and ethical object in Code Geass. There won’t be as much flashy mecha moves in Code Geass as there are in TTGL.

Personally, Code Geass still remains my top favorite, but TTGL just comes close to it.

      2. I don’t that series. I’ll think about checking it out. Thanks! I have time during this holiday break, so I’ll get to watch a lot of titles from my to-watch list. But I think if I’ll get to the mecha ones, Code Geass would be at the top since I didn’t get to finish it before. Thanks again, Miha-chan!
