Lost Memories: One of the Greatest Tragedies

30-DAY ANIME CHALLENGE

Day 12:  Saddest Anime Scene

Another difficult one.  I’ve watched so many sad anime that gave me misty eyes to gut-wrenching sobs.  But for today, I’m going to choose a scene from Shounen Onmyouji (少年陰陽師).  It’s originally a light novel series written by Yuuki Mitsuru (結城光流) and illustrated by Asagi Sakura (あさぎ桜).  There is also a manga adaptation, but since it’s originally a novel series, I recommend that you forego the manga and watch the anime instead.  It’s up to you, though.

The saddest anime scene here is when Guren (Mokkun) completely forgets his friendship with Masahiro.  I’m a sucker for lost memories tragedies because it’s one of my greatest fears in life–to be completely forgotten by my loved ones.  The anime emphasizes the development of friendship between Guren and Masahiro in every episode, so when Guren loses his memories of their relationship, it was heart-breaking!

I admit that there are other sadder anime scenes than this, but I want to give special mention to Shounen Onmyouji because I observed that it’s unfairly under-appreciated by most anime fans.  It’s a good anime, with a sad ending (in the anime, at least).  The friendship between Guren and Masahiro is beautifully portrayed throughout the series, and I’m sure that your heart will also break when Guren loses his memories of Masahiro.

Imagine the person that you love the most forgetting everything about you.  That’s just so sad. . .and tragic, isn’t it?

So this is my chosen “saddest anime scene” (for now).  What’s yours?

  1. This is also one of the things that make my heart hurt, and probably why I loved ef a tale of memories to bits despite the fact that every episode when Chihiro and Renji appear always broke my heart. Aah, the pain was too real.

    1. I watched some of the first episodes of Ef years ago but never got around to finishing it. Indeed. Forgotten memories tragedies are heart-breaking. There’s this one anime that I watched when I was in my early teens, but I can’t remember the title.

Your new avatar is so CUTE!!!

      1. I’m really a sucker for dramas with that setup.

For example, in Fushigi Yuugi, though it was just a short subplot, it hurt to see Miaka hurting so much, seeing Tamahome brainwashed.

Hmm, can you describe this anime you can’t remember the title of? I might have watched it.

Awww. Thank you!!! Fuhahahaha I thought I’d make a relaxed appearance by utilizing Chizuru’s cuteness. :3

      2. Oh my gosh, oh my gosh. Now that you mention Fushigi Yuugi. . .it was my favourite anime for a long time, until I got hooked with shounen, and eventually ONE PIECE took its place as my favourite. I hated the Fushigi Yuugi OVA. I wanted to wring their necks. Hahaha! Oh well.

Hmmmmm. The anime I’m trying to remember is school life drama. The art is cute, with chibi-like quality to the characters, I think. I can’t remember much. But it seems that at the end, one of the female characters are gradually being forgotten by her friends.

      3. I watched the OVAs, loathed them, and erased from my memory. Basically it’s just the main series that I love.

Hmmmm. I can’t think of an anime with that description. Maybe I have not watched it yet, or it was just so forgettable a story for me–that the memory loss setup didn’t appeal to me/wasn’t effective.

      4. Exactly! I was disappointed by them. I was like, what the heck? Like you, I adore the main series, too. I thought it was romantic. There are many times, however, when I became annoyed with Miaka.

I can’t remember that anime at all. I thought it was so sad during that time. I’m wondering why I can’t remember the title, though. Hmmm. . .Never mind. I’ll probably encounter it again someday. Maybe.

      5. Of course, shoujo heroines should be annoying at some point in the story, not that they should always remain annoying–what would the character development be? 🙂 It was nice to see her grow through the series, though.

      6. That’s right. Although I prefer that the heroine not be annoying all the time, right? But indeed, it was great to watch Miaka’s personality develop as the story goes on.
