Tony Tony Chopper: The Tanuki, Ahem, I Mean the “Tonakai” Doctor

< Day 14 | Day 16 >
Day 15:  Favourite Animal Sidekick, Pet, or Summoning From Any Anime

My favourite animal sidekick is Tony Tony Chopper from my number 1 favourite series ONE PIECE (ワンピース) by Oda Eiichiro (尾田 栄一郎).

I’ve written about Chopper before in a post titled “Kawaii Chopper”.  He’s one of my favourite characters in OP.  He was born as a blue-nosed reindeer, but ate the “Hito-Hito no Mi”(“hito” means “human” and “mi” is “fruit”; lit. “human-human fruit”).  As a result, he acquires human qualities such as the ability to walk on two legs and the ability to speak and understand human language.

He’s the most adorable and the cutest character in the series.  I like that he’s super intelligent (he’s a doctor, for goodness’ sake!) but at the same time, he’s also super gullible.  I particularly adore his quirks where he tries to hide with his whole body sticking out, his Shimura Ken dances whenever he’s complimented, and his famous dialogue tag, “Sonna ureshiku ne zo, kono yarou!” (context:  That doesn’t make me happy, you bastard!).

I also like that his character has depth with his painful history of being discriminated.  As a result of eating the “Hito-hito no Mi”, he finds himself unable to belong with neither the animal nor the human world.  That’s why it makes it more meaningful when Luffy finally convinces him of being one of his nakama.  The arc where the Mugiwara Pirates meet Chopper for the first time is one of the most touching.

Once again, I want to praise seiyuu Otani Ikue (大谷育江) for doing such a fantastic job in bringing Chopper’s character to life.  Her portrayal of his character multiplies his cuteness many times over.  Tony Tony Chopper of ONE PIECE is my favourite animal sidekick.  Who’s yours?

  1. I just bought a Chopper soft toy for my cousin a few days ago, because she really likes Chopper as well!

Hmm, for animal sidekicks, I pretty much only know Happy from Fairy Tail and that’s it, so I would say Chopper is much better ^^

  2. I liked your post and your choice of favorite pet. I personally chose Pikachu for my entry. Unfortunately, I stopped contributing to “30-DAY ANIME CHALLENGE” (at 22). I’m glad someone is continuing to contribute, though looking forward to seeing your next entry.

    1. Thanks! Pikachu would be my #2, as well. Well, Pikachu was my #1 before I watched ONE PIECE and just fell in love with Chopper.

Well, I’ve been doing this challenge since October. 😀
Life gets in the way, but I still want to complete it however long it takes. Thanks for dropping by. Cheers!

  3. I want to clarify one thing and have my impression on Chopper checked: Is he a tsundere?

By the way, my guy friend also likes Chopper! He even set the hat as his phone screen wallpaper. 🙂

    1. Hmmmmm. I’m not sure tsundere is the appropriate term to describe Chopper.

I just adore Chopper! I was all about Pikachu before I fell in love with Chopper. Your guy friend has good taste.

      1. Ah, alright. But afaik, it was really amusing to see Chopper getting all worried when there’s something not right. And he’s really awesome because he’s a doctor, as you said.

Yes, my friend is a big OP fan like you. Too bad, though, his brother accidentally lost their external HD that contained episodes 500 and above which I would eventually copy. 😦

      2. Yes, I think that him being a doctor is one of the great ways to make his character more dynamic and unforgettable. He’s super smart, as well. It makes me go, if this reindeer can do it, I sure can do it, too. Haha!

        What? That sucks. Oh no.

      3. Yep. “Way to go prcy!” But I failed this time. This incident was actually a pretty big downer, further discouraging me from actually getting back into watching the series. 😦 That’s why I can’t bring myself yet to watch it, nor promise that I will any time soon.

      4. Oh well. It’s up to you. I’m taking a break from OP, as well. That’s why I’m on a shoujo phase right now. So what is your guy friend going to do with it? Is he going to restore the lost episodes?

      5. Internet here is sooooo slow. 😦 Ugh. It’s so frustrating at times. That’s why getting a copy of a series is a tedious task, but that would also mean that the copy is so precious–it would take a lot of patience and motivation. XD.
