Kurapika’s Chain of Death

30-DAY ANIME CHALLENGE
< Day 21 | Day 23 >
Day 22:  Favourite Weapon, Gear, or Armour Used in an Anime

My favourite anime weapon hasn’t changed since 1999–Kurapika’s Chains.  I’ve been dreaming about his chains since I watched the first anime adaptation of HUNTER x HUNTER.  So cool!

I think he has the coolest Nen weapon in the entire series.  You may disagree with me, but I don’t care.  Kurapika suddenly becomes a bad-ass after the Hunter Exam during the York Shin Arc.

He’s essentially a Conjurer-type Nen user, but becomes this freaking awesome Specialist when his eyes turn red.  He calls this state “Emperor Time”, where he’s able to wield 100% of each Nen categories (Enhancer, Transmuter, Conjurer, Emitter, Manipulator, and of course, Specialist).

His right hand holds his chains–five chains for each finger.  Each chain has its own specific purpose.  Here’s a short refresher of each chain:

Judgment Chain (Little Finger)
Kurapika can only use this chain when he’s in Specialist-Mode (when his eyes are red). A small dagger is attached at the end of this chain. He wraps the chain around a person’s heart with the dagger pointed at it, while he sets 2 conditions that the person must absolutely obey or the dagger will stab the heart, instantly killing the person.  He has a dagger chain wrapped around his own heart.

Dowsing Chain (Ring Finger)
A small metal ball is attached at the end. This is the chain that Kurapika often uses to fight.  He can also use this to “dowse”–to find missing objects/persons and also as a lie detector.

Chain Jail (Middle Finger)
This chain with a hook end can only be used against the Gen-ei Ryodan (Phantom Troupe).  If he uses it on a person other than a “spider”, he dies.  It wraps around a “spider”, forcing them in a state of Zetsu. Nen is completely shut down; the most dangerous weapon against a “spider”. Uvogin is its first victim.

??? Chain (Index Finger)
Not yet revealed, as far as I know. I can’t wait to learn what kind of chain it is.

Holy Chain (Thumb)
A cross is attached at the end. It can only be used when Kurapika is in Specialist-Mode, increasing his Enhancement abilities up to 100%.  He uses it to heal grave injuries instantly.

How cool is his weapon?  I like that each chain has its different use.  I especially LIKE when he goes into “Emperor Time”.  Seriously.  Who wouldn’t want 100% command of all the Nen categories?  That’s just too awesome.  But of course, it’s also a double-edged sword that will instantly kill him if he violates the conditions he set upon himself to obtain exponential power.

Although his chains are born out of hatred and desire for revenge against the Phantom Troupe, I still think they’re the best nen weapons in the whole series.  I think that his chains trump Gon’s Jajanken, Killua’s electricity, and (sigh) sadly, even Hisoka’s Bungee Gum & Texture Surprise.

Kurapika’s Chains are my favourite anime weapon.  What’s yours?

  1. You beat me to it!!! >.< I extremely love this weapon as well! I love how detailed it is compared to the rest of the Nen abilities in the series. That's why the Phantom Rouge arc is my favorite of all the arcs. The moments when Kurapika encounters the Spiders were the best in the arc… for me.

Now I think I have to think of another weapon. 😥

    1. I know, right? That’s one of the reasons that Kurapika’s chains are my favourite weapon–it’s so detailed!

Oh, and speaking about his encounters with the spiders & our previous conversations about soundtracks, do you remember the background music from those encounters? Gave me goosebumps, especially during the climax when Chrollo was “conducting” the “orchestra” of his spiders murdering everyone.

Aw. You can still feature Kurapika’s chains, if you want. You don’t have to choose another weapon. (whispers: I’m so glad I beat her to it. Phew!)

      1. Not only that! Kurapika’s determination to only hunt the Spiders was pretty admirable (for me, at least). Though it might put him to a disadvantage if he were to face other opponents, he still chose those kinds of functions for his chain! That’s badassery (he’s pretty strong even without needing to use the chains, for sure).

Hmm, I can’t remember the exact pieces, but I do recall feeling intimidated every time such BGM was playing. I must check out the official sound track to have a proper grasp of the entire music.

Tsk. This post is too good! I can’t write a better one at featuring the weapon, it will only make me do less justice for it (and Kurapika by extension). And I don’t want to tarnish that. 😉

I’ll come up with another, I’m sure there’s another power/weapon that I must have liked.

      2. High-five, sistah! I couldn’t agree more. But his determination to just hunt the spiders is what gave him the ultra-bad-ass Nen power. It makes it more exciting to watch, knowing that if he ever breaks the conditions he set upon himself and use a spider-specific chain on a non-spider, he’s going to die.

Ooooh. Do that. The background music during that arc is. . .hmmmm. . I think comparable to that of Death Note. Very impressive.

Hahaha! Now I feel a little bad. Anyway, you still have lots of time to think about that. You’re still within the first half of your anime challenge. As for me, I don’t even know when I’ll be able to finish this challenge. But we’re taking our time, aren’t we? No need to rush. 😉

        Cheers!

      3. Oh my. We’re completely in sync with Kurapika and his Nen power. XD (I’d like to share that I don’t really fancy calling Kurapika a man. D: Even with the first TV series, I can’t help but see Kurapika as a woman. A masculine woman, if I may add.)

Thanks for reminding of the DN OST! I’ve already a copy of those, but yet to listen to them properly. They’re just there in my music library.

Now, don’t feel bad. Hahaha. I don’t know when I’ll finish mine, too. You guys are already moving on from this trend, while I’m still on this boat. Lol I feel a little bit left behind. But anyway, it’s important for me to do things at my pace. 😉

      4. Well, you’re not the only one who’s uncomfortable of treating Kurapika as a male. Sakura Namikaze also told me that she thought he was a woman. As for me, I had a huge crush on him when I was a kid so I’ve always thought of him as a guy since the beginning.

No problem. I have the soundtracks, too. I listen to them when I need to relax. Well, even if they’re not THAT relaxing because they’re too scary to listen to. Haha.

Aw. I’m actually having a little trouble about the rest of the challenges. I’m finding it harder and harder to decide how the answer them. Oh well.

  2. Kurapika’s also my favourite character from Hunter x Hunter 🙂
I’ll probably have to re-watch it one of these days. I stopped at around episode 100.

My favourite weapon is Allen’s Anti-Akuma weapon from D.Gray-Man.

    1. High-five!
Kurapika’s not my favourite character in the series, but his chains are my favoutire Nen weapon. My number 1 favourite character is actually Hisoka.

What a coincidence! I’m actually re-watching D. Gray-man again. It’s been so long since I last watched it. I was still in my teens back then. I like his weapon, too.
