HUNTERxHUNTER: When Hunting for Your Dreams Becomes a Frightening Obsession

Rating:  😀 😀 😀 (3 out of 5 grins)

I’m a great fan of the HUNTERxHUNTER series.  I love both anime adaptations.  I won’t say I love “everything” about it, but you can say that I love “almost everything” about HxH, including the theme songs & soundtracks used in both anime adaptations.

Today, I’m featuring the second ending theme song of the 2011 anime adaptation of HxH Hunting for Your Dream by Galneryus.  It’s not my #1 favourite theme song in the series, but I like it.  I think that it’s very appropriate to the series as a whole, but I’m more impressed that they used this ending during the Phantom Troupe Arc.

The lyrics are intended to be inspiring, urging you to hunt and follow your dreams, but the overall music somehow contradicts the lyrics’ message.  I’m not sure about you, but the melody and the vocals feel desperate, sad, with some undercurrent of anger.  I think that the song fits Kurapika’s emotions during this arc.

Kurapika’s “dream” (if you can really call that a dream, perhaps “goal” is more appropriate) is to avenge the massacre of his clan by the Phantom Troupe.  He would go to any lengths, even forsaking what is accepted as moral, just as long as he can kill all the “spiders” in the troupe.  Hunting for Your Dream encourages you to aim for your dreams without stopping, but if you think about Kurapika in the context of this song, then the meaning completely changes.  It becomes more like a frightening obsessions for revenge.

Overall, I like this song.  I like how all the instruments, especially the guitars and the drums, meld together creating a “desperate” call to hunt for your dreams.  The vocals are not bad, too.

  1. Just put it in my Netflix playlist as per your recommendation. (bows) The one they have is the one that ran 2011-13. I’m starting it with wake-up coffee and scones in the am. I will watch an episode every day. I just finished Psycho-Pass last week as my “eye opener” series. — have you seen it?

    1. Oh! That’s wonderful! I’m happy for you. I’m sure you’re gonna enjoy it. Oh wow. Watching it first thing in the morning. Good for you.

I’ve watched a couple of the first episodes of Psycho-Pass. Will take up the series again when I feel like it. Did you enjoy watching it?

      1. RE: PP Yes, four episodes in I could not wait to see what happens next. I thought it was pretty good. Season 1 in a satisfying way. The series will continue, but there is no “cliff-hanger”. For me a good series wraps up a story arc, so if the series does not continue then there is still a satisfying ending. I have not heard good things about the 2nd season of PP however. I watch everything through Netflix, so I have to wait much longer.

I think my son would be the intended market for Hunter x Hunter more than me, but I am liking it so far. My son only watches the English dubs and HxH does not have an English track (at least on Netflix), so he will not likely see it.

Reading subtitles while having coffee is a good way to jump start the brain : )

      2. I see. It’s good that you enjoyed it. Don’t take too much stock about the negative impressions of a series before you watch it. People have different preferences, after all. Perhaps you’ll like it. We don’t know, right? But if you hate it like the others, then feel free to rant about it like everyone else. 😉

I see. Well, I think that even adults can enjoy HxH because it has dark & mature themes also, especially at the later story arcs. It’s good that you’re enjoying anime with your son.

Indeed. That’s a good way to wake you up. Good for you. Enjoy watching anime! Cheers!

  2. Good Rating System! I like it.
I’m not sure if i have heard it yet! The theme song….Well if you like it, i’m sure i will. Because we have similar interests 🙂

    1. Thank you. Well, it’s up to you. I don’t expect everyone to agree with me, and I certainly don’t expect everyone to like the same things I like. Anyhow, if you do like it, then good for you.
