My Love Affair With Reverse Harem Series

If anime is food, then Reverse Harem Series are my chocolate parfait.  I have a sweet tooth and I crave my bishounen every now and then.

I conquered the 30-Day Anime Challenge, and one of the challenges is “Anime You’re Ashamed You Enjoyed”.  Of course I answered that “There is No Anime That I’m Ashamed of Watching”, which is a fact.  However, reading several posts by other bloggers, I’m quite shocked, terribly shocked, to learn that the majority of them revealed that they’re ashamed of enjoying Reverse Harem anime series.  Why is that?  Is liking gyaku harem such a taboo that you’re ashamed you enjoyed it?  I’m not accusing anyone, so hold up your panties.

I just want to say that I see nothing wrong in enjoying reverse harem, even if its only redeeming quality is the collection of (totally hot) bishounen while the story is total crap.  But what’s wrong with that?

I’m not ashamed to say that Brothers Conflict is one of my favourite anime, even when I cringe at its story.  I adore the  harem of  gorgeous bishounen, though.  Attention!!! Natsume is mine, so pick one of the other guys, alright?

natsume-abs-brothers conflict

Oh gosh.  Those abs. . .drool. . .I think I just lost a few brain cells staring at him.

Anyway, I like that there are more scenes in Brothers Conflict that make me go doki-doki and kyaaaah than scenes that make me cringe because they’re just too darn cheesy or simply annoying.

Diabolik Lovers. . .Amnesia. . .Starry☆Sky. . .All of these titles have a harem of mouth-wateringly hot guys, but I just couldn’t take their stories.  I don’t like their stories, but I watch them anyway.  Why?  You’re still asking me that?  Because of the hot guys, of course!  Call me shallow, I don’t give up a damn.  I’ll still watch these crap, even if it means just ogling the hot guys.  And besides, most reverse harem series consist of an amazing cast of seiyuu.  For that alone, I’ll watch an anime, even if I don’t particularly like the story.

Saying all of these, there are gems in this genre that actually have great stories, in addition to the hot guys.  If a harem of bishounen is not enough for you and you need an interesting and a bit complicated story line, then here are my absolute favourites that I highly recommend:

1.  Saiunkoku Monogatari (彩雲国物語)
In addition to a great premise, Shuurei, the main protagonist is a mentally and emotionally strong woman.  I despise weak and damsel-in-distress-type female protagonists, so I can’t help but root for someone as reassuring as Shuurei.

saiunkoku monogatari

2. Hanasakeru Seishounen (花咲ける青少年)
Like Shuurei of Saiunkoku Monogatari, the protagonist Kajika is mentally and emotionally strong.  I love, love, love the hot guys in this anime.  But more importantly, I love, love, love the story.  It’s entertaining and a bit complicated.  This is a series that you’ll remember long after you finished watching it.

hanasakeru seishounen

3. Fushigi Yuugi (ふしぎ遊戯)
Ah, the classic.  I remember watching this as a child.  I think it’s the anime that contributed to the total corruption of my girlhood innocence.  Looking back now, Miaka is one annoying girl, but I still love this series.  It will always have a special place in my heart.

fushigi yuugi

4. Harukanaru Toki no Naka de (遙かなる時空の中で)
The premise is very similar to Fushigi Yuugi.  I think that the story of Fushigi Yuugi is better, but when it comes to the female protagonist, I think that Akane is better than Miaka.  Akane actually knows how to use her powers, and she has a better disposition than Miaka.  But I like Fushigi Yuugi’s harem better.

Harukanaru Toki no Naka de

The following are my personally selected Honourable Mentions:

1. Fruits Basket
I remember enjoying this series when I was younger.  I prefer the manga over the anime, but overall it’s a good series.  I don’t think that I like it as much now as I did when I first watched it, but it brings out good memories whenever I think about it.

2. Ouran High School Host Club (桜蘭高校ホスト部/Ouran Koukou Hosuto Bu)
I’m not particularly fond of Haruhi’s deadpan character, but I prefer her over weak and whining crybabies.  I enjoyed the comedy the most.  I just wish that the anime continued to adapt the rest of the manga.

3. Pretear (新白雪姫伝説プリーティア/Shin Shirayuki-hime Densetsu Puriitia)
Like Fruits Basket, I have good memories watching this series when I was younger.  I don’t like it as much now compared to when I first watched it, but it’s entertaining and quite romantic, as well.

4. Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge (ヤマトナデシコ七変化)
There’s no romance at all, but the comedy is awesomely laugh out loud.  I enjoyed the harem (of course), but what I enjoyed more is the transformation of Sunako into a beautiful woman.

5. La Corda D’Oro (金色のコルダ/Kin’iro no Koruda)
l love the music in this anime!  I also enjoyed the romance.  I don’t think I’ll have the same degree of enjoyment if I watch this again, but I still listen to the music in this series every now and then.  I know that there’s this recent series titled La Corda D’Oro Blue Sky, but I haven’t watched it yet.  I’m not hearing good things about it, but I’ll watch it for myself. . .someday.

6. Neo Angelique ~Abyss~
It’s not great, but it’s not bad, either.  The ending was a little disappointing, but I enjoyed the series while it lasted.  I think that the main draw for me in this series is the cast of seiyuu.  For that alone, I’ll give this anime a higher grade than it deserves.

7. Hiiro no Kakera (緋色の欠片)
The story is interesting, but not original.  There’s nothing about it that made me exclaim wow.  But I love the romance between Tamaki and Takuma.  The romantic development is gradual.  It’s not one of those boy meets girl, and then BANG, they’re suddenly in love.  And what’s more, I love, love, love the first opening them song Nee by Fujita Maiko.  It’s the perfect theme song for the series.

8. Kamigami no Asobi (神々の悪戯)
To be honest, I didn’t like this very much, but I still watched it because—you guessed it right—it’s filled with hot guys!  I don’t like the romantic pairing.  I would’ve chosen Balder for Yui instead of Apollon.

And that’s it for my exhaustive list of my recommended Reverse Harem Anime Series.  Thank you very much for reading this LONG post.  It would’ve been much longer, but I didn’t include the other titles that I didn’t enjoy that much.  How about you?  Do you like reverse harem series, too?  If so, what are some of your favourites?

I’m glad that you liked my reverse harem post and my blog. You made me happy. Oh no! But Natsume is mine. You can have Subaru, but I won’t let anyone have Natsume. Ahahaha. 1. Hi, Faea. Thanks for dropping by. I personally think that reverse harem is a group of guys associated with one girl. Not all the guys are going to truly “love” the girl, but they may show interest with her either passively or actively. I don’t count just being surrounded by boys as a harem, just because a lot of other anime genre may also have this type of arrangement. If there is an emphasis in romance in that series, then yes, I’ll categorize it as reverse harem. Cheers!

  3. I started watching ‘The Story of Saiunkoku’ about 2 hours ago after finishing ‘Yona of the Dawn’ around 3 hours ago (I know I move on fast and I prefer using the English name and watching the English dub, even though I speak Japanese, but can you blame me since it’s the Winter Holidays here? ;P) and I absolutely love it so far. Shuurei’s personality and attitude towards things is definitely a refreshing change and I can’t wait to see how this story plays out.
I’ll make sure to check out the other one you hold in high regard. Thank you for making this list and curing my holiday boredom.

    1. Oooooh! Good for you! I love anime marathoners like me. It’s how we live, right? I’m delighted to hear that you like it. And don’t worry about what language you’re watching it in. It doesn’t matter as long as you’re able to watch the anime. And you’re very welcome. This list severely needs updating as there are a lot of reverse harem series cropping up lately. But that’s work for another day. Thanks a bunch for dropping by & sharing your experiences & opinions with me. I appreciate it. Enjoy. Cheers!

  4. This was an interesting read. I personally think Ouran is the king (queen?) of reverse harems simply because most of the guys are more interested in Haruhi as a friend as opposed to instantly falling for her, which is both realistic and a refreshing evasion of common cliche.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Hmmmm. Actually Ouran’s characters are supposed to be parodies of all the most common types of characters in the shoujo genre. So I think that it doesn’t really evade common cliche in the sense that it’s completely original. On the contrary, it uses the strongest cliches available in the genre that they seem to become original.

  6. A lot of people bash fan service shows for being nothing more than a excuse to show hot girls. I guess people class reverse harem anime as a guilty pleasure because it is essentially the female equivalent of eye candy for guys.

    1. Ahahaha! Fair enough. But still I’m not ASHAMED of loving reverse harem. In fact, I’m not ashamed of any anime I watched, no matter how filthy or crappy they are. Being not ashamed doesn’t mean that I like all anime I watch, I just don’t see any reason to be guilty about watching them. And I like some fan service here and there, as long as they’re well-placed and works well with the story. It depends, I guess. You?

  7. i love reverse harem too except no matter how hot those bishounen is, sometimes I just can’t get myself through the anime. I do plan on though, it probably depends on my mood on the day.

But I loved Kamigami no Asobi, I thought it was a great reverse harem with a good story unlike amnesia, diabolik lovers and brother’s conflict. (those 3 has awesome guys but the story was boring)

    1. Ahaha. I understand what you mean. If you want to watch a reverse harem series with great stories, you should definitely try watching “Saiunkoku Monogatari” and “Hanasakeru Seishounen”, if you haven’t watched them yet. I also just recently watched “Akatsuki no Yona”, and I’m a fan of the manga.

I didn’t really like “Kamigami no Asobi” compared to how I liked “Brothers Conflict”. “Diabolik Lovers” & “Amnesia” were horrible, but still watched them because, well, I just like looking at hot guys. Anyway, thanks for dropping by.

      1. oh I haven’t tried those two, I’ll check them out sometime. Thanks.
I loved Akatsuki no Yona. I’m pretty sure it ticked all my boxes. I haven’t read the manga yet because it’s still ongoing and I’m always unsure of starting ongoing manga because I’ve done that often before and it’s hard to keep it up with the weekly or monthly releases and I end up losing interest or waiting for months before having to reread the manga just to refresh what has happened.
Haha yeah I understand what you mean. Me too, can’t stop looking at hot anime guys lol

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Do try watching them. I personally think that those two have better stories than “Akatsuki no Yona” and both of them are “completed”, so you feel satisfied in the end. I hope that you try reading “Akatsuki no Yona” manga. It’s great and it shows Yona’s development as a stronger female, even moreso than what was covered in the anime. I really like how Yona was portrayed as an annoying and spoiled weak princess at the beginning and then gradually becoming stronger as she experiences one hardships after another. I think that her character development is much better than most heroines from many reverse harem series.

        Like

      3. I will try watching the two you mentioned.
And yes, I really liked Yona’s character development in the anime and I will pick up the manga eventually. =)
I agree she was so annoying at first but then when I saw her shoot that arrow on that ship, it was an awesome feeling like she’s grown so much.

        Liked by 1 person

      4. I hope that they adapt the rest of the manga into anime. I can’t wait to watch it. “Akatsuki no Yona” is now definitely one of my favourite reverse harem series. Well, like you said, the manga isn’t completed yet but I think it’s worth it to read the published chapters so far. Indeed, she’s grown so much but it’s not like one of those abrupt changes where someone becomes strong just like that. Hers is gradual and I really like that.

        Like

      5. Exactly! You feel a deeper connection the character which is important in a great story. I know, right? I don’t know if there are any announcements yet. I’ll be very disappointed if there are no more adaptations. Crossing my fingers.

  8. You don’t know how much I love you right now ! I didn’t know some of the reverse harem anime that you have on your list, especially those with a particularly good story. I’ll definitely be checking them out! Also, you’re right, there’s no shame in liking reverse harem series, most of us just go in there expecting fanservice above all else, but then when you find that diamond in the rough, it makes out for a very nice surprise. I love that feeling. ❤ And it’s a shame that a lot of people look down on the genre! >.<

I agree. Like you, I also mostly watched reverse harem because of the hot guys but a good story is a great surprise. I’m always on a look-out for a revere harem that has a lot of hot guys and of course great story.

Thanks for dropping by. Keep on watching anime. Cheers!

      1. I wasn’t aware of, mostly, the older ones, like
Harukanaru Toki no Naka de, Hanasakeru Seishounen and
Saiunkoku Monogatari. I also added Fushigi Yugi a while ago, but I completely forgot it had reverse harem elements XD shame on me! For the rest, I watched them all, 3 more titles I could add from the top of my mind would be Hakuouki, UtaPri and Arcana Famiglia (thinking about it, there are quite a lot of them ._. I used to complain how there weren’t enough LOL, though sexy bishies are NEVER enough).
You too! Keep watching anime and spread the love! And thank you for the follow too! As I also followed you, I’ll be a dedicated reader of your blog from now on ! Please take care of me! bows

      2. “Saiunkoku Monogatari” focuses more on the political aspect of the story, especially on Season 2 but it’s probably my most favourite reverse harem series. It’s neck and neck with “Hanasakeru Seishounen”. Oh my gosh. I just can’t get enough of THAT series. I watch it again and again when I have time.

I watched “Hakuouki” after I wrote this post, that’s why I didn’t include it here. I like it because it also focuses on the historical and political aspect of the story, but it’s too depressing! As for “Uta no Prince-sama”, it’s been forever in my to-watch list but I haven’t gained to courage to watch it yet. One of these days. I watched “Arcana Famiglia” before but unfortunately, I didn’t like it very much.

You’re right! Sexy bishounen are NEVER enough! Thanks again for dropping by. You’re very kind. Me, too. I’ll be looking forward to more of your posts. Cheers!

      3. That’s very good to know. I particularly enjoy stories that tend to concentrate on other things too besides the romance (or the action, or whatever genre it is; here speaking of anime/books/games/drama in general too). So you like “Hanasakeru Seishounen” that much! Okay, I’ll be starting with that one then! XD

If the “Hakuouki” anime was depressing, the otome game is even more. XD
As for “Uta no Prince-sama”, just laugh. It helps. A lot. It’s one of those series that I can keep watching and laugh at how “bad” or cheesy it is. It just makes it all more entertaining.
“Arcana Famiglia” is one of those bad adaptions, I agree too, unfortunately.

Thank you! You’re very nice too!

      4. Cool! If you have time, tell me what you think of it when you do get to watch “Hanasakeru Seishounen”. 🙂

I heard that, too. But nevertheless, I liked “Hakuouki”. It’s depressing, but the animation is beautiful and the guys are HOT and the story is good.

Well, I’ll think about it. I’m still gathering my courage and readying myself mentally before I watch “Uta no Prince-sama”.

    1. High-five! I know, right? For people like us, it doesn’t really take a lot to satisfy us when it comes to reverse harem series. They just need to have hot guys and that’s it.

I just finished watching “Hakuouki” myself. I was really impressed. I liked that it doesn’t really focus on the romance, but more on the story. Although I often feel depressed because it’s just one loss after another, but that’s to be expected since it was semi-based on actual historical events.

      1. Haha exactly!

I didn’t know much about the series going into it, so was beyond shocked when they started dropping like flies… my poor heart wasn’t expecting all of these deaths!

        Like

      2. Indeed. I know exactly what you mean. Nevertheless, it’s a beautiful story, albeit not the most original. Even if it consisted of tragic death after another, I’m still satisfied after watching it. You?

      3. Ahaha. I don’t think the main character is “boring-as-hell”, just not that interesting compared to heroines of other reverse harems. But yes, I was a little bit disappointed that she didn’t do much even until the end.

        Liked by 1 person

      4. Yeah, although I wasn’t too surprised that she didn’t do much.
I guess I have a very low tolerance for the constantly-need-saving-can’t-help-self-even-if-I-tried characters haha. I guess she did have quite a strong back-bone, just didn’t get any real opportunities to do much with it.

        Like

      5. I agree. Yukimura had a strong backbone and I was always looking forward to her actively using it. I’m like, someone train her how to use her sword already! Hmmm. Perhaps next episode, I would think, but then I reached the final episode. That was a disappointment, but I still liked the series overall.

        Liked by 1 person

      6. Yeah.I guess she was at least brave enough to draw the weapon when faced with enemies… should would have been chopped to pieces if it wasn’t for her harem of gorgeous Samurai bishies, but that’s besides the point haha

        Like

      7. I know, right? Perhaps that’s one of the reasons why she’s not skilled in combat—there’s a harem of strong, hot guys who are ready to protect her.

        Like

      8. Well, that’s one of the problems of anime being based from visual novels. They just can’t do all of the story lines from the game. But I think that even if she wasn’t that strong in combat in the anime, I still liked the anime.

  9. New follower incoming; hi 🙂

Anyways, to the topic at hand; being a guy naturally I enjoy harems more then reverse harem. However a guilty pleasure of mine is that every now and then, I find watching a reverse harem fun. What can I say? Fruits Basket and Ouran High School Host Club are just too darn good to ignore, despite it being ‘for girls’; Fruits Basket gives me the feels, and Ouran makes my sides hurt from laughing so hard 🙂 I don’t think I’d go so far as to buy either of them- if only because I don’t want to look creepy to non-otaku 10 years down the line if I’m 30+ and having these in my collection- but that all said, there’s no denying they can be high quality stuff 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Hello!
It’s good that you appreciate reverse harems even though you’re a guy, although I’m not really too surprised. Many anime watchers I encountered are open-minded and don’t mind watching stuff that is outside what is expected of them to watch. Indeed, Ouran & Fruits Basket are some of the most common recommendations when it comes to reverse harem series.

Oh, I wouldn’t care too much about that. I don’t think someone is creepy if he/she has anime like these in his/her collection at 30+. Anyway, thanks for dropping by. Cheers!

  10. I have to admit, I do love this genre as well, although I’m pretty picky about the characters/story as well as about the appearance . . . and the amazing voice actors. Like many others, I was basically doomed after falling in love with Hostbu. 🙂

    1. I understand what you mean. Although I may not be as picky as you, I do appreciate an excellent story, great characters, an incredible cast of seiyuu. I recommend “Hanasakeru Seishounen” & “Saiunkoku Monogatari”, if you haven’t watched them yet. Thanks for doing by. Cheers!

  11. Oho! I remembered that the first manga that brought me into the reverse-harem (hell) genre would be OHHC and La Corda D’Oro and the first anime was Fruits Basket. And then from there… well, they’re like “welcome to otome games hell” xD

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Nooooo! It’s not hell. It’s heaven. 😉
Indeed, Ouran is perhaps the most common recommendation when it comes to reverse harem series. You play otome games? I’m actually doing my best to avoid them because I just know that when I start to play them, I’ll become addicted and it’ll be extremely difficult to stop. Anyway, thanks for dropping by. Cheers!

  12. I like Uta no Prince-sama just for the music and humor. (Plot? Who cares!) I think most of my enjoyment for the series originates from watching it when it was on Nico Nico. The comments made the show epic.

I’m currently playing BroCon. Only done with Suba-chan and the normal route. Don’t worry, I won’t be your rival for Natsume. 😉 I’m looking forward to Maa-kun and Fuu-chan the most. I’ll decide afterward.

I feel like checking out Hanasakeru Seishounen now. I’m always up for a good reverse harem. Or watch a bad one just for the voice and ear candy.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Oh, I know exactly what you mean! 😀
Plot? Who cares, right? As long as we’re enjoying ourselves watching these reverse harem series, the plot doesn’t matter.

Ooooooh. So you like Subaru? He’s your favourite? Fuuto is a pervert, but he’s still endearing. And thank goodness. One less rival for Natsume. Phew! Which version are you playing?

You should totally check out Hanasakeru Seishounen. It’s really good. Not only is the harem awesome, but also the heroine and of course, the story.

Thanks for dropping by, Krystallina. Keep on watching anime. Cheers!

      1. I just wanted to get Subaru done with first because of spoiler reasons. I have both games, so I plan on doing all routes eventually. I’m saving my favorites for last. Probably be Fuuto since I love teasing characters like that and because I’m a sucker for those types of voices.

Added Hanasakeru Seishounen to my watch list. Thanks!

      2. I see. Makes sense. Might as well try all the hot guys from the harem, right? I played a demo for it, but then stopped immediately. And now I’m doing my best to avoid otome games completely because it’s so easy to become addicted to them. I may lose interest with a real human being forever because of these games. XD

I agree. The seiyuu are awesome. And you’re welcome. Hope you enjoy “Hanasakeru Seishounen” when you do watch it.

  14. Oh I love reverse harems…I think I like them more than normal harems, but that might be because I’m a girl and would love my own harem. XD And sometimes the girls in regular harems can come off like items or objects instead of as people. 😦 Thank you for this list, I’m going to save this as a reference! They all sound so good!

    1. I agree. I prefer reverse harems than normal harem because I’m female. And YES! I’d love to have my own harem, too. 😉

You’re welcome. I hope you enjoy the titles that you decide to watch. Keep on watching anime (and ogling some hot guys). Cheers!

  15. ZOMG I love Natsume as well!!! I swear he’s like a fan favourite, I am not even half as fond of the rest as Natsume :> I think Diabolik Lovers, Amnesia and BroCon are the ones that are really labelled ‘guilty pleasure’ because of their real lack of a story and how the girl appears to jump from one guy to another in rapid succession (namely due to time constraints) – but I really enjoyed them maybe precisely because of that xD

    1. Oh no! I have so many rivals for Natsume! XD

I agree. Those 3 are the most common guilty pleasure for most people, but that’s precisely why we enjoy them. With these kind of anime, we don’t really care that much about the story. We just want to ogle the hot guys. 😉

Anyway, thanks for dropping by. Cheers!

    1. I know, right? Natsume is cool. Well, let’s cross our fingers for a second season. Have you watched the Christmas & Valentine’s Day Specials yet? Anyway, reverse harem series are yum! Keep on watching anime. Cheers!

      1. Ohohoho. You should, especially the Christmas Special. Both of them are short, so it’s but that big of a time investment. Anyway, hope that you enjoy them when you get to watch them.
