In a previous post, I shared with you “My Love Affair With Reverse Harem Series”. In today’s post, I’m going to extend that love affair to any series that has hot, hot, HOT guys! Bishounen alert, people!! It’s raining men, Hallelujah!!!
After watching the bishounen-filled Hakkenden, I wanted more. No, I craved more. More HOT GUYS, please!!! And so I searched and I searched and I searched like a desperate woman—ahem—and then I finally came across Makai Ouji.
Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist (魔界王子 devils and realist) is written by Takadono Madoka (高殿 円) and illustrated by Yukihiro Utako (雪広 うたこ). The anime series is only 12 episodes long.
Story Rating: 😀 🙂 (1 & 1/2 out of 5 grins)
Animation Rating: 😀 😀 😀 🙂 (3 & 1/2 out of 5 grins)
HOT GUYS Rating: 😀 😀 😀 😀 (4 out of 5 grins)
Makai Ouji does not have the best story to stimulate me intellectually, but since I already lost a few brain cells ogling the hot guys from Hakkenden, I didn’t care much. Like Hakkenden, I was quite satisfied with Makai Ouji’s bishounen line-up and its a-ma-zing cast of seiyuu. I think that for these reasons alone, I’ll rate this anime higher than it deserves. Oh yeah. That’s the proof of my missing brain cells.
So should you watch this or not? Well, it depends. If you want a great story, don’t bother. There are plenty of other anime series out there that are 100 times better than this. But if you’re like me and you just want some hot guys and to listen to some great seiyuu, then by all means, watch Makai Ouji. I would like to caution you, though, especially if you have some strong Catholic/Christian beliefs. This anime contains quite strong role reversals that you might find offensive.
Take for example the role of demons versus the role of angels. Demons are still “evil”, but compared to the angels in the series, the demons may as well be saints. The portrayal of the archangel Michael is especially sadistic, and if you have a foot fetish, I think you’ll love him in this anime. Not to mention that he’s voiced by Kamiya Hiroshi (神谷浩史) who has a great sadistic voice.

I’m not too bothered by these because I treat them as creative expressions, rather than religious insults. But if you’re one of those people who take offense by this kind of religious portrayals, then you’d better not watch this anime.
As for the main protagonist, William Twining, who is the “realist” part of the title, I’m not too fond of him. He’s an entertaining character but not very charismatic if you compare him to other protagonists like Inuzuka Shino of Hakkenden or even Onoda Sakamichi of Yowamushi Pedal. He’s ultra-skeptic about demons and all things “supernatural” that he’s not charming at all.
As for the demons, oh yeah. They’re the entrée. Although some of them are very feminine like Sytry and Gilles de Rais, they’re still pretty hot if you’re into androgyny. I would say that my favourite is Camio who is voiced by Kakihara Tetsuya (柿原 徹也), the same seiyuu who voiced Shino, the main protagonist of Hakkenden.

I adore the hint of shounen-ai between William and most of the demons. But in the end, it seems that the focus is the relationship (friendship) between William and the demon Dantalion.
The ending is anti-climactic and very predictable. Nevertheless, disregarding the story altogether, I enjoyed Makai Ouji. Not only because of the good character designs of the hot guys, but also because of the great seiyuu voicing them. I only mentioned Kamiya Hiroshi and Kakihara Tetsuya in this post, but rest assured that there are other great seiyuu in the cast.
It’s up to you whether you want to watch this anime or not. I don’t recommend its story, but I wouldn’t go as far as call it “crap”. . .hmmm. . .it’s “average”, I guess. Okay, it’s “below average”, but the hot guys are gorgeous. So you can just put Makai Ouji under your “When I have a HOT GUY craving” list.

You should. Especially if you’re just looking for hot guys to admire, rather than a good story. 😉

I love your reviews, particularly when you get to the point right at the beginning, hot guys, no plot, just hot guys.

Ahaha! Thank you very much. I do enjoy my hot guys now and then, and I’m not ashamed of it. Besides, I don’t want to mislead people by saying “watch this series, it’s great”, when the truth is that the only great things are the characters and not the story. Anyway, thanks for dropping by. Cheers!

Kamiya Hiroshi is THE greatest sadistic voice god ever 😀 not to say the other prominent seiyuus can’t do a great job, but this guy is just …. i get goosebumps listening to him. 😀

Oh my gosh. You said it. His sadistic voice is indeed awesome, and if the character he voices is the antagonist in a series, you can’t make yourself hate that character entirely because, well, Kamiya Hiroshi is voicing that character.

Exactly. In fact, I think no matter how bad the antagonist ends up being, its Kamiya Hiroshi so. I probably discard my morals there and then xD

Exactly. His voice is just charismatic. What can we do, right?

I agree. It’s a fantastic series when it comes to the hot guys and the awesome, AWESOME seiyuu line-up. Not so much to the story, though. Anyway, thanks for dropping by. I hope that you keep on watching anime. Cheers!
