episode of sabo - one piece tv special

I was so excited the moment this TV Special was first announced.  I stalked the ONE PIECE website almost everyday, awaiting for more teasers and information.  I read tweets from fellow fans and eagerly discussed it with them.  Ah, those were good times.

Our discussions mostly consisted of the things that we wanted the TV Special to include.  Of course we knew that since this was another “Episode of” TV Special, we shouldn’t be expecting much original material or any new information that was not already known from the main series.  But we still couldn’t help ourselves from speculating.

What I Was Hoping To Be Shown. . .

1. Sabo’s Relationship With Monkey D. Dragon
I already knew from the start that this was hopeless at this stage of the story, but I still hoped with all my might that this TV Special might give even just a hint of Sabo’s relationship with Luffy’s father, Dragon.  Dragon is one of the most mysterious characters in the series, and I can’t wait to know more about him, his past, and the way he runs the Revolutionary Army.

2. Sabo’s Battle Techniques
We already saw his Dragon Claw in the main series, so I was hoping that the TV Special would show some new moves.

3. What Kind of Life Did He Live?
I wanted to know how his life went after he “died” at Goa Kingdom, and then taken under Dragon’s wing.

Unfortunately for me, all of these hopes went unanswered.  But that’s alright, I guess.

When I Finally Watched It. . .

I planned my schedule ahead of time, so that I could watch the special without any interruptions.  The day of its broadcast, I couldn’t contain my excitement.  I felt like a kid, and it was glorious.

I was literally bouncing on my seat as I watched the opening sequence.  It barely started and I was already crying.  Honestly.  It made me remember Ace.

I miss Ace!!!!!!!!

I already said this before, but I’m going to say it again.  Ace’s death was gut-wrenching, but I honestly think that it was a genius move by Oda-sensei.  It made the series so much better and made every action of the Straw Hat Pirates afterwards all the more significant.  I think that Ace became a much greater figure when he died.  His death cemented him a legendary status whose influence still reverberates throughout the entire series.

Just a Tiny Little Bit Disappointed. . .

lt saddens me to say this, but even my humongous love for ONE PIECE couldn’t prevent me from feeling just a teeny-tiny bit disappointed.

It Was Too Soon To Make an Episode of Sabo TV Special

It’s exciting that a TV Special was made for Sabo, but I think it was too soon.  His character is not yet well-developed in the main series, so there’s very limited information available for a satisfying TV Special.  But I still love him, and I still love ONE PIECE, so even if I’m a bit disappointed, I still rated this highly.  I just wished that TOEI waited a little bit more before they decided to create a TV Special about Sabo.

But I still LOVE IT!

Nevertheless, I LOVE this TV Special.  But of course you have to take into account that I’m super biased towards ONE PIECE, as I’m a huge fan.  I think that even if they make a crappy story with the characters, I’ll still say that I love it.   Unfortunately, I’m not the most reliable and the most objective critic when it comes to any ONE PIECE works.   But I don’t care.  What’s important to me is that I was entertained.  I really don’t care much about what other people think, much less get influenced by what others say about this special.

How about you?  Have you watched this ONE PIECE TV Special yet?  If so, what did you think about it?  If not, what in the world are you still waiting for?

    1. Indeed. Like I mentioned in this post, I think that they made this Episode of Sabo too early. I wish that they waited a bit for more information about Sabo to be revealed from the manga.

Now that you mention it, I want to know that too! We’ve only been shown that Robin gets along with Koala & Sabo. I want to see if Robin got to work with Dragon closely.

  1. I have seen this special and I felt a little bit disappointed like you. Still, it was nice seeing Sabo and Ace’s death was really gut wrenching. I thought we were going to see a little bit of Dragon. I really like the end credits music. Sabo was really awesome.

    1. I know, right? But the keyword to fans like us is the “little bit” disappointed. I still enjoyed it. I guess we’re disappointed because we were expecting something more that wasn’t revealed yet.

I agree. It was great to watch the special from Sabo’s perspective, and Ace’s death came back to me all over again when I watched this.

  2. What’s important is that you still liked it! 🙂 Biased or not. hahaha In my opinion, objectivity does not exist, one can just judge it with a clouded or less clouded mind and always in base of each of us’ personal experiences or in base of an already pre-estabilished plot writing and developing structure (which I think only literature or script writing university students actually get to study.) but that is getting into technicalities. I didn’t watch One Piece and I didn’t consider ever trying to get into it. The little things that I know about it I got to know them because it’s unavoidable in the anime/manga community. 😄 There are also a good share of One Piece games that I stumbled across too!

    1. Thank you! Exactly. I’m a literature student, so I get what you mean. Although I’ve met some people who are (annoyingly) objective, more or less, emotionless about some topics. But it remains questionable whether or not they are really objective or they just don’t give a darn.

Anyway, OP is my favourite series. And just like what I said in this post, I’m so biased that even if I’m shown with a crappy OP story, I’m pretty certain that I’ll still like it.

You haven’t watched an episode of OP at all? Not even 1?

Well, you’re the game person. I don’t really play games, but I hear about some OP games now and then. Have you played one?

      1. I know what you mean! People are generally touched about certain subjects in particular or that they find fascinating, so claiming to be objective is actually being subjective because, as you said, they either just don’t give a damn about it, or they simply don’t like the use or execution of certain troubles/cliches/twists which is completely subjective. One cannot deny incoherences or plot holes though, as long as they can’t be explained by “emotion”. That can also be interpreted in different ways based on who watches…Ah, I started my rambling again, sorry!
No, I did not watch any episode. Just a few scenes here and there. 😄 I am not a fan of the artstyle. As an ex-art student, I formed my eye focusing more on the aesthethics. I know it’s a shallow reason but there are some shows that I can’t get into if i don’t like the artsyle.
Yes, I played a collectible card game which had the story of the few first episodes too, up until Nami joined. (But that’s just how far I played. Since I didn’t like the artstyle for the cards at all or OP in general, I ended up not playing anymore.) But I do like Ace! 8D

      2. Ahaha. Don’t worry. I’m used to “ramblings” on a daily basis, even more so now that school’s back. My professors like to call these “ramblings” as “intelligent and educated discussions”. 😉

        I agree with you. I don’t think there’s really a 100% objective person out there, unless it’s a computer.

Aw. I see. That’s alright. I don’t think it’s shallow. Everyone has different tastes.

    1. OH MY GOSH! It was super-duper AWESOOOOOME~~~~
I already suspected that it’s going to happen sooner or later, but when I finally read the chapter, I was like “That was the best cliff-hanger! Now I can’t wait what happens next.” The manga is getting more and more exciting. It’s not good for my heart.

P.S. Although I wrote that I’m a little disappointed with Episode of Sabo, I hope that you watch it. It’s still good (speaking as a huge OP fan).

      1. YES i really want to know what happens next chapter! I hope Luffy agrees to it. I bet the last battle will be like the one with Whitebeard but it’ll be Luffy and his alliances oh my god I’m so excited!
I’ll probably wait a while before i watch the episode of Sabo =)
Btw I’m guessing you’ve seen Film Z and Strong World?

      2. I know, right? I bet it’s going to be more epic than the Marineford War. Can’t wait! Having all of those allies flying under the Mugiwara flag is like being one of those Yonkou.

Oh, I see. Well, I think you already know what happens in the TV special anyway because a lot of people are talking about it, myself included.

Yes, of course! I watched all films. You?

      3. it definitely will be way more epic! My friend told me that she read online that Oda said the final battle will make the Marineford arc look like nothing.
I’ve only seen those 2 films and the Hand Island one. I prefer to watch those that is written by Oda himself. =)

      4. Yes! Kaidou already said in his first actual appearance that the upcoming war will make the Marineford War look like nothing, right? Can’t wait.

I see. Of course, I enjoy those films written by Oda-sensei himself more than the other ones, but I also like the other films. Oh, and I really enjoyed the Hand Island.
