We’re Dear Friends Forever. Farewell, Going Merry!

< Day 9 | Day 11 >
Day 10:  A Song That Makes You Cry

Dear Friends by Triplane is the sixteenth ending theme song of my #1 favourite anime series, ONE PIECE.  It’s used from episode 246 until episode 255.  I daresay that it’s one of the most beautiful, and I also argue the most emotional song used in the entire OP anime.

Dear Friends is a song the makes me cry because it was the song used as the background music when the Straw Hats gave their beloved first ship, Going Merry, a viking funeral; bidding her their final farewell as she sinks into the darkness of the sea.

In “Arria’s Top 10 Most Gut-Wrenching Scenes in ONE PIECE (Pre-Timeskip)”, I ranked Going Merry’s funeral as #2.  I sobbed so hard while watching this scene.  But it seems that we’re not the only ones deeply affected.  It’s said that Oda-sensei cried while he was drawing this scene in the manga, and then cried again when he watched it in anime for the first time.

If you watched this scene and didn’t cry, or even just get misty-eyed, then you’re a heartless robot. Just remembering it is making my eyes watery. (sniff) What’re you looking at?! I’m not crying! (sniff)

Now you know that Dear Friends by TRIPLANE is a song that makes me cry.  What’s yours?

    1. I know, right? I was sobbing so badly when I watched this scene, with this song playing as the backround music. Now everytime I listen to it, it reminds me of Merry’s funeral. Great scene.

      1. Oh no. Now you’re making me teary-eyed. Ace’s influence is still very strong even up to this point of the series. He’s become legendary. And as for Merry, I really love how Franky made Mini-Merry 2. So adorable, and it feels like Merry’s not really “dead” forever.

      2. I agree. And I’m just so glad that Sabo’s alive and he got the Mera Mera no Mi. So awesome. I can’t wait to see what kind of role he’ll play in the future. The manga is getting more and more exciting, don’t you think?

      3. Well, by “bad” I hope that you won’t die like Ace. But if it’s just some other thing, I think it’s okay since it’s going to make the action more interesting. Some of the past characters are also going to appear like the members of CP9 and such. Can’t wait. I also can’t wait for Jinbe to reach the Straw Hats. Ooooh. There are just so many things that I’m looking forward to.

      4. I forgot about CP9. I noticed some returning characters coming back. I felt that the Dressrosa Arc was kinda like the Alabasta Arc. I also want to see Jimbei return and join Straw Hat as well. Things are heating up.

      5. You said it right. Things are heating up. Now that the Dressrosa Arc is finished in the manga, I’m waiting for the anime to finish adapting it, too. I want to re-watch all episodes of the Dressrosa arc in one go.

      6. Indeed. He has many loyal followers, which was surprising. And I couldn’t really despise him with all my heart whenever he defends the most loyal of his followers and call them his “family”. And regarding his string powers, I think that he gave a hint about a higher level of using the powers of devil fruits. He said something about an awakening of some sort that’ll let a user manipulate his surroundings and not only his own body like what he did when he turned buildings into string. I wonder if Luffy will be able to turn objects into rubber when using his powers in the future.

      7. True he did call his servants “family”, I will give me respect for that. I have been curious about this awakening powers he mentioned. Also like you, I wonder if Luffy can alter the enviroment with rubber. Maybe this another secret of the Devil Fruit.

      8. That would definitely be crazy. Maybe the story is going to be like Water 7/CP9 arc where on of the crew members have a secret and they leave the crew because of the government…or I could be overlooking things. Looks like we will have to wait.

      9. Indeed. Things are getting more and more interesting. We’ll have to see if our predictions are really going to happen. It’s just that we never know. Oda-sensei is famous for throwing all of these crazy curveballs when we least expect them. Although he drops clues here and there early on, so we have to be attentive.

      10. I am not sure chapter you reading this, but I am barely at the first volume of the mini-arc. It has the mail seaguls traveling. I am reading this from the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.

      11. Ooooooh. I see. I read from the ahem, illegal scanlations, ahem every week until the volume becomes available. I don’t read from the jump magazine because I prefer the volumes which contain more chapters.

      12. I see. Well, I promised to myself when the Dressrosa Arc started that I’ll wait until the entire arc is over before reading it, but this is ONE PIECE we’re talking about so I couldn’t resist reading and torturing myself every week just to know what’s going to happen.

      13. Exactly. Anyway, it’s been a blast talking to you about ONE PIECE, as always. Thanks for dropping by. I really appreciate it. I’m looking forward to the next ONE PIECE topic we can discuss. Cheers!

  1. GOING MERRY TT^TT Nooooo. Damn feels.
One Day actually brings out my feels more, since it was repeatedly played for that whole arc and just reminded me or Ace but hey, i cry at almost every arc. ._. Damn it Oda.

    1. Ahahaha. I would say, THANK YOU, Oda-sensei instead. 😉
I like shows that successfully make me cry. I like “One Day”, too, but if it wasn’t connected to Ace’s death, I wouldn’t like it very much. I prefer “Dear Friends”. I think it’s a really good and emotional song, even if it wasn’t used for Going Merry’s death. Anyway, thanks for dropping by. Hope that you continue watching ONE PIECE. Cheers!
