Singer May J. does a lot of cover songs. Some are a hit, while unfortunately some miss by a wide mark. I featured in a previous post her rendition of Demi Lovato’s Let it Go titled Ari no Mama de in Japan. In that post, I commented how her version of the wildly popular song has less impact than the original. In today’s post, I’m featuring another cover by May J. of a legendary song originally sung by Utada Hikaru (宇多田ヒカル) titled First Love.

Undoubtedly, May J. possesses a beautiful voice that matches a beautiful face. To be honest, however, I’m not that impressed with her cover of First Love. It seems to me that she’s trying too hard to imitate how Utada Hikaru originally sung the song. I would rather that May J. chose to sing it in a different style that fits her voice.
If the cover is so similar to the original, I would rather listen to the original. Utada Hikaru’s original version is more emotional and heartfelt than May J’s rendition, in my opinion. Nevertheless, May J. looks beautiful in the music video and her voice remains beautiful.

What do you think of May J.’s cover of Utada Hikaru’s First Love? Do you like it or not? Which do you prefer: the original by Utada Hikaru or the cover by May J.?
