Redefining the Rotten Fandom of the Rotten Yaoi Genre

Hello, folks! Can you believe that Otaku Warriors for Liberty & Self-Respect (OWLS) is now on our sixth blog tour? Wow! For this month, our Chief Creative Officer LynLyn gave us the topic titled “Team”. Three members have kick-started this tour already, and I’m honoured to follow after our President Katrina Sade (Grimm Girl) with her perceptive post “When We Fetish Yaoi”. Please make sure to read it.

“Team” Blog Tour Topic

June is known as “Pride Month” within the LGBT & Queer communities in honor of the Stonewall Riots that occurred at the end of June in 1969. At OWLS, we strongly support individuals who are part of the LGBT & Queer communities as well as individuals who are struggling with their sexual orientation or gender identity.

“Team” functions in two ways: 1) allows individuals to show their support to the LGBT & Queer communities and 2) allows LGBT & Queer communities to express their love to whoever they want.

So for the “Team” topic, we will be discussing our favorite LGBT & Queer characters in anime and other pop culture related media, the impact of the yaoi and yuri genre within LGBT & Queer communities, our personal stories involving gender/sexual orientation, and etc.

Reaching For the Stars in “Space Brothers” (OWLS Blog Tour)

Hello, folks! OWLS is now on our 5th blog tour. Yay yay! Wohoo! As always, thank you very much for the support. We all appreciate it. For this month, our Chief Creative Officer LynLyn assigned us the topic “Strength”. Please don’t forget to read Rai’s tour post titled “Strength By Overcoming Anxiety in Amanchu”. She did an great job.

“STRENGTH” Blog Tour

“Your greatest weakness can become your greatest strength.”

In anime, characters struggle with inner demons or physical weaknesses that make them feel insecure and prevent them from achieving goals. Yet when these characters overcome their adversity, they can finally be able to express who they are or in other words, “Free to be Me.”

For this tour, we will be exploring anime characters that have overcome adversity due to a personal insecurity or physical weakness. It is these type of characters that many anime fans may identify as role models because fans are able to feel empathetic towards these characters’ struggles and insecurities.

Racewashing in “Attack on Titan” Films & Other Adaptations (OWLS Blog Tour)

Hello, folks! Today is finally my tour stop for OWLS’ April blog tour. Please check out Rai’s tour post about “The Colorful World of Avatar”. She did a great job. For this month, our Chief Creative Officer LynLyn assigned us yet another awesome and meaningful topic: “Colors”.

We are all part of one race, the human race. “Colors” refers to people of color in anime. For this monthly topic, we will be discussing how people of color or characters of different “races” (a literal alien race) are represented in anime. Some topics we are considering are the dangers of stereotyping bi-racial characters, and the importance of “inclusion”.

The majority of the characters in Attack on Titan (進撃の巨人 / Shingeki no Kyojin) are white, presumably European. Based on the surnames, many of them are of German origin like the main protagonist, Eren Jaeger. Mikasa is the only known surviving character so far who is of Asian descent. She is bi-racial: her mother Asian and her father white.

Asianwashing?

Sanctuary in ONE PIECE: Status VS. Nakama (OWLS Blog Tour)

Hello folks! We of the Otaku Warriors for Liberty & Self-Respect (OWLS) have reached our 3rd blog tour. How exciting is that? I hope that you enjoyed last month’s Yuri on Ice “Flight” Blog Tour. It was super fun, believe me. This month’s topic is Sanctuary and it’s our busiest blog tour yet, with 3-4 bloggers posting every week. I hope you enjoyed Rai’s tour post this past Monday about “chuunibyou”. She did a great job. Now it’s my turn. Here we go.

A sanctuary is a place of safety and stability. In anime, there are several different places and environments that characters call “home”. For this topic, we will be discussing various locations and settings within certain anime series.
