15 Anime You Need to Watch Before You Can Call Yourself a Sports Anime Fan

l love sports anime!  Series in this genre are some of the most inspiring.  What I love the most in watching sports anime is the constant emphasis on how hard work is the sure-fire way to get you the results that you want.  Of course, talent will get you there faster but hard work alone will force you to obtain the skills you need to reach your goals.  I love that.  How inspiring.  Below is a list of sports anime that I compiled featuring 15 of the most influential sports series of all-time.

Fighting With Ippo’s Dempsey Roll

30-DAY ANIME CHALLENGE
< Day 22 | Day 24 >
Day 23:  Favourite Attack Someone Used in an Anime

As Hajime no Ippo (はじめの一歩) by Morikawa George (森川 ジョージ) is my favourite fighter anime, it’s easy for me to say that my favourite attack someone used in an anime is the Dempsey Roll.

Try to withstand this!
Try to withstand me now!

The Dempsey Roll is Makunouchi Ippo’s signature move, with each punch packing incredible knock-out power.  This attack was actually developed by real-life boxer Jack Dempsey (1895-1983), but Ippo develops the technique on his own without knowing that it’s already a recognized boxing move.

This powerful attack gave him a magnificent comeback after his epic defeat by Date Eiji.  It also earned him the title “Fuujin” or “Wind God” because of the frightening combination of speed and power.  As the Dempsey Roll became his signature move, challengers focused on strategies to defeat it.  Its most obvious weakness is its predictability.  His beloved rival, Miyata Ichirou, once commented that for a good counter-puncher like him, there is not a more tempting move to defeat than the Dempsey Roll.

Coach Kamogawa & Ippo rectified this problem by making it unpredictable.  Takamura commented that they have developed a dangerous New Dempsey Roll with endless possibilities.  This, however, put a huge toll on Ippo’s body, so he’s focusing on creating a more durable body.

It hurts just watching it. . .but it's still so cool. . . .
It hurts just watching it. . .but it’s still so cool. . . .

As I mentioned before, I’m not knowledgeable about boxing mechanics but I love watching boxing anime & (of course) Manny Pacquiao.  I watched the “real” Dempsey Roll in action (search it on Youtube), and I must say that it’s not as impressive as its portrayal in the Hajime no Ippo anime.  It’s so much cooler!  Well, that’s the difference between fantasy and reality, folks.  But no matter.

Now you know that the Dempsey Roll is my favourite attack someone used in an anime.  What’s yours?
