Don’t Confuse the Anime Character With the Seiyuu

I’ve had my fair share of anime crushes, and now that I think about it, I think that  about 90% of the reason why I develop an anime crush is the voice.  I have a fetish thing for voices, after all.  Ahem!

Anyway. . .what I’m trying to say is that I understand when people admit into becoming full-fledged fangirls (or fanboys) of a seiyuu.  I also understand when someone admits to watching an anime just because their favourite seiyuu is on the cast.

Seiyuu are one of the most important aspects of anime.  They bring characters to life, and I think that depending on how well they portray their characters, they contribute greatly to the overall popularity of the anime series, and I argue even to the total sales of the series’ merchandises.  Sometimes you even fall in love with a character because of the excellent portrayal of the seiyuu.

BroCon’s 14 to 1: My Not So Guilty Pleasure

Day 7:  A Song That Is Your Guilty Pleasure

l don’t really have any song that makes me feel “guilty”, but perhaps the closest one that makes me feel a bit shallow (not guilty, mind you) is 14 to 1, the ending theme song of the reverse harem series Brothers Conflict.

Welcome to the Beautiful & Colourful World of KARNEVAL! Hot Guys Alert!

During the spring, I had this phase where I only watched anime with hot guys.  As a result, I wrote some posts about bishounen like “My Love Affair With Reverse Harem Series”, “More Hakkenden Bishounen, Please!” and “Ogling Hot Demons in Makai Ouji”.

Continuing on this theme of hot guys, I want to talk about another bishounen-filled series titled Karneval (カーニヴァル) by Mikanagi Touya (御巫桃也).  The anime is only 13-episodes long, so you don’t have to invest too much time watching it.  It seems that the manga is still ongoing, but I haven’t read it yet.  Perhaps someday.

Day 30:  An Anime You Wish Never Ended and Continued On

I have many anime titles that I wish never ended and continued on, but since I just watched this title recently, the anime that I wish never ended and continued on (for now) is Hakkenden:  Tōhō Hakken Ibun (Eight Dogs of the East) / [ (八犬伝 ―東方八犬異聞―].

Nizuma Eiji: The Eccentric Genius

< Day 20 | Day 22 >
Day 21:  Favourite Goofy Anime Character

My favourite goofy anime character is Nizuma Eiji from Bakuman. (バクマン。).  He’s actually my #1 favourite character in the series.

He’s an ultra-eccentric genius mangaka.  I just LOVE his character!  I adore his character more than anyone in the series, even more than Takagi Akito whom I declared as the anime character I’m most similar to.  It’s because I’m similar to Takagi that I like Eiji more.  I admire his “natural talent” when it comes to creating great manga, although if you analyze deeper, you’ll realize that this “natural talent” is the product of his childhood experiences and his intense obsession with manga.

It is said in the series that Eiji draws manga as naturally as breathing.  He can’t live without manga.  As a writer like Akito, I envy this kind of obsession.  I’m passionate about writing, but I’m not at the point yet to confidently say that I’m obsessed with it.  My goal is to become “obsessed” with writing, as Eiji is obsessed with creating manga.

It’s also said that the character of Nizuma Eiji is a combination of Oda Eiichiro-sensei (尾田 栄一郎) (ONE PIECE mangaka) and L, another eccentric genius character from Death Note created by the same mangaka duo who created Bakuman.  How cool is that?  A big ARIGATOU to Oba Tsugumi-sensei (大場 つぐみ) and Obata Takeshi-sensei (小畑 健 ) for creating these awesome series.  I hope that you team up again and create more amazing series in the future.

okamoto nobuhikoI also think that Okamoto Nobuhiko (岡本 信彦) did a splendid job in voicing Nizuma Eiji.  He brought Eiji’s eccentricity to another level.  When I first learned that Okamoto-san is Eiji’s seiyuu, I was quite shocked because his voice sounds so different.  Think of Usui Takumi (Kaichou wa Maid-sama!) and Rin Okumura (Ao Exorcist), and then compare them with Nizuma Eiji.  What a versatile voice!  Although I wonder if his throat was alright during recording with all those shouting required for Eiji’s character.

Now you know that Nizuma Eiji is my favourite goofy anime character because he’s an eccentric genius.  Who’s yours?
