Redefining the Rotten Fandom of the Rotten Yaoi Genre

Hello, folks! Can you believe that Otaku Warriors for Liberty & Self-Respect (OWLS) is now on our sixth blog tour? Wow! For this month, our Chief Creative Officer LynLyn gave us the topic titled “Team”. Three members have kick-started this tour already, and I’m honoured to follow after our President Katrina Sade (Grimm Girl) with her perceptive post “When We Fetish Yaoi”. Please make sure to read it.

“Team” Blog Tour Topic

June is known as “Pride Month” within the LGBT & Queer communities in honor of the Stonewall Riots that occurred at the end of June in 1969. At OWLS, we strongly support individuals who are part of the LGBT & Queer communities as well as individuals who are struggling with their sexual orientation or gender identity.

“Team” functions in two ways: 1) allows individuals to show their support to the LGBT & Queer communities and 2) allows LGBT & Queer communities to express their love to whoever they want.

So for the “Team” topic, we will be discussing our favorite LGBT & Queer characters in anime and other pop culture related media, the impact of the yaoi and yuri genre within LGBT & Queer communities, our personal stories involving gender/sexual orientation, and etc.

Arria’s Top 4 Shounen-Ai Manga (With Hot Bishies, of course!)

You should see the expression on my face as I write this post. I’m beside myself with giddiness and excitement that I’m finally, actually, really writing this post. Besides my Yuri on Ice posts, I haven’t really written any BL-centric posts here. I’m remedying that and will start posting more BL content from now on. Yay yay!

But I’ll take it easy for this post, so as not to shock you too much with the hardcore stuff that I usually read. More of that coming soon. The following are my top 4 recommended shounen-ai manga. Shounen-ai focuses more on the love and friendship between two male protagonists, as opposed to the sexual relations usually found in yaoi. So these 4 manga are more for the pure-hearted. (wink wink) They are my absolute favourites. I highly recommend all of them.

Yuri on Ice “Flight” Blog Tour

An individual takes flight when there is a goal, a dream, or an ambition that he or she wants to achieve. However, for this blog tour, we are going to look at “flight” in different lenses: the underdog’s dream, the possibilities that Yuri on Ice allows viewers to think about, and also the dangers of greed and ignorance that can influence one’s dream.

Exploring the World of Yaoi Through BLCD’s

Ah, yaoi.  (/≧ω\)

Ever since the Internet became the hub for many manga and anime fans, you WILL always find someone who has a taste for Boys’ Love (BL).  It took a while for me before I became comfortable reading and watching BL manga & anime.  Now I don’t mind them at all.  Sometimes, I even prefer them over many shoujo series out there.  Besides, almost most of the time, BL series feature incredibly HOT guys whose personalities I prefer more than many of the male characters in gyaku harem (reverse harem) series.

I don’t normally search BL titles by myself.  Most of the series that I read/watch are recommended to me by fellow anime/manga fans who are also BL lovers.  Those of them who are proficient in Japanese recommend listening to BLCD’s.  I always reply to this recommendation with a non-committal “I’ll do that next time.”  This “next time” never really happened until last month.

love stage

I was messing around Youtube, trying to search for something interesting to watch.  Then for some reason, videos of BLCD recordings appeared on my “Recommended to You” list.  Not really thinking too much about it, I clicked on one video.  Boy, was I shocked!–in a good way, of course.

Before I knew it, I was clicking on the next video, and the next one after that, and so on.  Then I began to recognize some of the seiyuu from my favourite shounen anime, and I was like $#@&!* Nanja koryaaaaa????!!!  ヽ༼ ಠ益ಠ ༽ノ

After hyper-ventilating, I moved my shaky fingers and clicked on the next BL recording.  I didn’t care about the titles.  All I wanted was to listen to as much as I could.  I don’t even remember most of the titles and the stories, but I DO remember the voices, especially the ones of my favourite seiyuu.  Of course, I know that many of my favourite male seiyuu are also doing BLCD’s, but this is the first time that I’ve heard them in this kind of drama CD.  Wow.  No wonder female fans go “Kyaaaaaaaa! <insert seiyuu name>-sama! Kekkon-shite kudasai!” whenever these seiyuu have public appearances.  As I thought, it doesn’t make sense that they get this kind of reception for their shounen roles.  It’s because of their BL roles that they manage to create this female hysteria.

During the first week of listening to BL recordings, I alternated between horror and mirth.  Horror at hearing some of my favourite seiyuu making moaning and, ahem, sucking and slurping sounds.  Then mirth. . .for all the exact same reasons.  Oh well.

Now that I’ve taken a taste of the world of BLCD, there’s no going back.  I’m going to hunt for the proper CD’s.  I can’t just settle for those short Youtube clips.  I want the complete BLCD’s. (*≧艸≦)

How about you?  Have you tried listening to Boys’ Love CD’s?
